Two things to note here: First, the only black people we see in the film are shown working hard in shadow and cold rain. Just consider the first three verses:. GIF: Disney. I just want to draw your attention to the opening shot of Dumbo which is a scary and stormy night. The weather immediately clears after this to reveal a group of storks delivering cute baby animals to mama animals.
The storm is unnecessary, and overly dramatic. Why, Disney, why? The mothers seem surprised, elated, or non-plussed by these bundles of joy. If babies were delivered haphazardly from the sky, who is to say you landed in the right family?
Is it love? Or did a bird in a conductor hat just throw me into this life? I reject this vision of the world. Which, yes, it is. But Dumbo really hits you over the head with it. In ? Is there a tragic backstory here? Or is it another instance of racism? And because of that, the whole scene feels like an awkward pastiche of wet dreams. Apparently, Dumbo drank Absinthe. I mean, what other alcoholic beverage could induce a four minute musical montage filled with pink elephants on parade and the nightmarish vision of a man made of cackling pachyderm heads?
The sequence is sort of fun, sort of horrifying. It makes the chase more interesting Shere Khan Shere Khan : You're trying my patience. Five, six, seven, eight, nine, TEN! Buzzie : Hey, Flaps, what we gonna do? Flaps : I don't know. What you wanna do? Ziggy : I've got it! Let's flap over to the east side of the jungle. They've always got a bit of action, a bit of a swingin' scene, all right. Buzzie : Aw, come off it. Things are right dead all over. Ziggy : You mean you wish they were.
Dizzy : [serious] Very funny. Buzzie : [to Flaps] Okay, so what we gonna do? Flaps : I don't know, what you wanna do? Buzzie : Look, Flaps, first I say, "What we gonna do? Flaps : Okay. Buzzie : Oh, blimey!
There you go again. The same notes again! This time, I've really got it! Buzzie : Now you've got it. So what we gonna do? Buzzie : So what we gonna do? Flaps : [feeling Mowgli's legs] Blimey!
