What type of clothing will I need? Note: The average low temperature is 42 degrees in the winter months and the average high temperature is 92 degrees in the summer months What about food while at the academy? During the academy can I go home on weekends? Yes, as long as there is no training event scheduled. What time do academy classes usually start and end each day? Is there physical fitness training involved? What equipment do I need for the physical training portion?
Do I have to buy my own gun? What about receipt of mail while I'm in the academy? Can I have a pet at the academy? What is the personal firearm policy on academy property? Personal firearms will not be allowed on academy grounds. The quickest path to join FWC law enforcement is if you're already certified for Florida law enforcement, such as being a sheriff's deputy or a state trooper.
If there's an opening at the agency, submit your FWC application online. You then undergo a physical fitness test, an oral interview and a background check.
If everything looks good, FWC offers you employment. Then comes eight weeks of FWC training, including education in conservation law, GPS, fisheries law enforcement, identifying wildlife, investigating boating accidents and more. After that, you undergo 16 weeks of field training, and then you're in. The process is mostly the same for everyone else, but it takes longer. If you're not certified, you'll have to attend a basic law-enforcement academy for 19 weeks, before starting your FWC-specific training.
Out-of-state law enforcement officers can skip this section, if they can get certified in Florida. Does anyone have any idea if this agency more or less expects you to do a ride along with an officer during the process or is that more for the applicant to see if they could see themself actually doing the job?
Also, does anyone know how it works on your initial duty station. I believe during the supplemental application you list out the top 3 counties you are interested in? Hope everyone is doing well! I would predict this evaluation is used as a datapoint in the selection process. Last edited by DT44 ; , PM. I guess we are getting a little closer now. It will be great to actually get the hiring process started.
Anyone have anything good to report as far as the process is concerned? Man it would be sweet to get hired on by FWC. Just have to stay patient. I just hope that they don't extend the application deadline like last year.
Once June 30th rolls around and the PAT offers start up, this forum should light back up. Application deadline has moved up to June 1st, Nice, we'll see how fast this app cycle moves. Just such a long process compared to local sheriff's office and PD hiring processes.
Can see how people eventually move on, dream job but takes a year to a year and a half to even get hired. I've got an app in with my local PD right now as a backup, figured if this doesn't pan out and I was still interested in conservation law enforcement down the road I can always do a lateral transfer. Heard it's easier to get hired on with FWC sometimes that way since they don't have to train you as much; just the conservation specific law enforcement.
ChristianAB98 commented. That is not true; being that you will be a fully commissioned officer they have to teach you law enforcement and then teach you agency specific training. I've heard that as a fully commissioned officer, you can apply for FWC and if you get hired on you join the academy at a later date for "breakout training".
Which I assume is the law enforcement training specific to FWC and obviously the conservation and game law enforcement specific training. This is what I was alluding to. Be at least 19 years of age. Possess a high school diploma or equivalent. Be a United States citizen. You have to be a U. You must be able to swim yards continuously, and you must pass FWC's vision and physical-fitness tests.
FWC will allow facial hair if it fits a certain criteria. Something that pays homage to the 19th century is always welcome.
You could go with the standard Wild Bill Hickock goatee that is all the rage with our mostly inland officers. You could go with the oversized muttonchops like Civil War General Burnside. The legal standards for an FWC Officer to search your property, including freezers, coolers, refrigerators, and other areas in cabins, shacks, homes, trailers, or vehicles, are contained in Florida Statute Game Wardens May Have Expanded Search Powers In some instances, game wardens may actually have more power than police officers when it comes to warrantless searches of persons or vehicles.
Typically, police officers must have probable cause or consent to search a person or a vehicle without a warrant. It said that plain-clothed or undercover officers cannot pursue you and they have to get a uniformed officer to do so.
You are only expected to identify yourself to Florida law enforcement officers police officers and Sheriff's deputies, not immigration or FBI agents when you are stopped on suspicion of a crime or a traffic violation. If you don't have identification documents, you may choose to remain silent.
