Our seemingly shared interest in education led us to a discussion about favorite teaching styles. She told me about her immersive experience in a Yale introductory French class, which was entirely taught in pure French. When she asked me about my favorite teachers and what made their educational style effective, I got pretty enthusiastic. I regret getting too casual when relaying an entertaining anecdote about the time my English teacher acted out East of Eden by pretending to smack his head against the whiteboard before physically laying down on the classroom floor.
Your interviewer is still older and more experienced than you, and the interview is a great place to showcase your maturity and self-awareness. Heather asked to see my paintings, so I showed her my art Instagram page, which she scrolled through before showing me one of her favorite abstract painters. She then asked me why my counselor had encouraged me, specifically, to apply to Yale. What exactly was it? I struggled a little to explain exactly what traits he had identified in me.
After all, why not any other school? Why me for Yale? Actually, I did not like it at all. He was 10 minutes late and rushed through the chat. He dressed very casually.
Son was debating whether to dress up or not; good thing he did not. He frequently used profanities in the conversation. I personally know three of them this year, all are STEM. Are the three you know all from the same school??? My daughter just had her Yale interview and said Yale had the most enthusiastic ambassador of its college among the interviewers of top schools.
If she had to choose a college based solely on alum interview it would be Yale. When I got to Yale this past fall, I exercised this right as soon as possible. I hoped my admissions file would provide some answers.
Spoiler alert: I got in. The admissions committee had to have liked something about me. I was self-aware enough to have vague expectations. In many ways, I was right. I did indeed score low on extracurriculars. Both readers responded strongly to my writing and the way I presented myself. My first reader said I seemed to have issues with interpersonal relationships, and the second questioned my self-confidence.
The importance of recommendation letters and alumni interviews was surprising. Admissions officers seemed to care more about how others perceived me than my own self-construction. My second reader wrote that if my interview aligned with the rest of my application, they would admit me. After reading this, I wanted to call my interviewer and thank him. My background was indeed influential.
College admissions reduce an individual to a collection of statistics and summaries. Viewing your admissions file forces you to accept this. There is no secret. My alumni interviewer told me that most Yale applicants have the potential to thrive here in New Haven.
Applicants may not request an interview; alumni and student interviewers contact applicants after their admissions materials are submitted. An interview can provide an additional opportunity to share information with the Admissions Committee. All Yale interviews, both those with alumni and those with current Yale seniors, are evaluative.
